After the enormous success of our girls’ camp, Camp Kachow! earlier in the year, it was no surprise that our boys’ camp, Camp Kaboom! was an equal success. This camp was originally scheduled in February, but unfortunately had to be postponed due to the 5-day circuit breaker lockdown in Melbourne. Finally, two months later, the 6 Three Connections boys packed up their gear and joined Glen, Jessica and Conor for a weekend getaway at Hollydene House!
Glen was a fantastic bus driver, getting us down to Cowes at perfect time for a delicious spaghetti bolognaise dinner, cooked by the man himself. The first day of camp was Jessica’s 23rd birthday, and so we celebrated with an extra special treat of some cake, how lucky! We settled the boys into their rooms and round up our Friday night watching the football altogether. Nick, Patrick, Evan and Ethan also began their weekend long pool tournament with multiple games. Eventually it was lights out for the preparation of a packed day of activities.
In the morning, Glen was kind enough to whip us up some egg and bacon muffins (just like Maccas, but better!) before we practiced our independent living skills of getting dressed, brushing our teeth and assembling whatever we needed for the day. We climbed back into the bus and got driven over the scenic San Remo bridge to the pelican feeding. The boys loved watching the pelicans yawn because their spine would protrude into their mouth! Yikes! We couldn’t leave the stunning views of the harbour just yet, so we sat with a spot of fish and chips for lunch. Those seagulls were pretty hungry too! Nick then lead the group down to the pier in the hopes to spot some manta rays, he’s a professional!
It was a beautiful sunny day on Saturday – perfect for a walk at Nobbies! The views of the big wide ocean were breathtaking, and Patrick even saw some wild bunnies hopping around the place. We were then lucky enough to be welcomed back to Stacey’s art studio for a private art workshop where the boys created some wonderful paintings of dogs, clone troopers, birds and even an abstract painting. Stacey’s favourite way to end her workshops is to have a dance in her yard to the boys’ favourite tracks. We had some keen World War II aircraft enthusiasts in the group, and so we went to the Phillip Island RSL to check out the medals, aircrafts, tanks and uniforms they had for display (and also, to have a nice warm pub meal!). To finish off our Saturday, we travelled back to Hollydene House for some football and a movie before bed.
Glen delivered us another fantastic breakfast of ham and cheese toasties before the boys, Conor and Jessica set out on a day of exploring Cowes. We put our boys’ competitive spirit to the test with a round at Grumpy’s mini-golf – some holes proved to be a lot more difficult than they looked! It was another relatively sunny day at Cowes, so we decided to take a walk along the foreshore where we found a fantastic grassy hill for some roley-poley, instigated by Jessica (one of her favourite games). We ventured out on to the pier to get right up close to the crisp clear water before the wind was getting a bit feisty and we decided to head back for lunch. Glen the chef delivered once again with a nice BBQ to finish off our weekend. This was one of the best moments on camp – a group of us sitting around some food having a great laugh at all the fun things we got to do on this camp. It was then pack up time and home time.
I’d like to thank our Camp Kaboom! participants for being extra patient with the rescheduling of this camp, the boys’ showed great resilience, and hopefully, it was worth the wait! Jessica and Conor had an awesome time getting to know everyone a bit better and we absolutely cannot wait for another camp soon – all the ride home we were brainstorming other activities we could do in Cowes, so stay tuned for more camp news later in the year!
